Houma Police, in Terrebonne Parish Louisiana, are hoping a mobile command unit will help make their jobs a lot easier during emergencies or community functions, wrote Staff Writer Dan Copp in the online HoumaToday newspaper.

The command unit, which is a high-tech RV with satellite, internet, video and radio capabilities, will be essential for communications and coordination for the department in the event of an emergency, said Houma Police Chief Dana Coleman.

The Parish Council approved the Houma Police Department’s request to purchase the unit to assist officers in the event of natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or other emergencies. After conducting a nationwide bidding process, the PD found a used mobile command unit at LDV for $85,000 – an affordable bargain for a unit that costs $400,000 new.

“The mobile command post will assist the police department when we have large-scale events, operations, it can assist us in training,” Coleman told the newspaper. “In the event of a storm it can be a mobile communications hub that we can operate out of. There’s an array of things that the mobile command unit can assist us with.”
