WIRELESS EMAIL IN YOUR PALM
A powerful new wireless communications tool available through ConectUS, a Southern California service provider, enables users to send and receive email, faxes and text messages anywhere in the world wirelessly. The Inter@ctive Messenger uses the Ardis nationwide wireless data network, designed by IBM and Motorola in 1981. The network has remained operational through major disasters such as the Loma Prieta and Northridge earthquakes. Even hurricane Andrew in Florida did not take down the system. The Red Cross and FEMA used the Ardis network during these disasters.

For dispatch operations, the Inter@ctive Messenger can be attached to a computer to communicate with units in the field. The communicator provides secure, reliable information links not only to dispatch centers, but to other agencies as well. In a multi-agency response, such as a hazardous materials spill, earthquake, or narcotics raid, the communicator allows participants to send vital information to any agency, regardless of its radio frequency. For Pubic Information Officers use, the PIO at a command post can send faxes directly to the media, to PIOs at other agencies, or to other PIOs back at the station, and receive text messages back. The unit will also send a text message to any fax machine or Internet email address.

REPEAT THOSE CALLS WITH DICTAPHONE ENCORE
Dictaphone has introduced the Encore instant call repeater, designed to give call-takers immediate fingertip access to critical recorded phone or radio communications. Installed directly on a Communication Center's Windows 95/NT CAD workstation, Encore's control screen gives call-takers access to emergency calls with a single mouse-click or keystroke. The result is faster reaction time for call-takers, who can now dispatch and retrieve calls from the same workstation. Call-takers can listen to calls recorded on Encore's shared memory module without interrupting recording. Or they can mark a segment of a call to replay over and over. In addition, the system allows call-takers to save recordings as .wav files using their workstations' multimedia capabilities. The recordings can then be e-mailed to a supervisor to save for training. Encore is backward-compatible with the Dictaphone 6602 model Call Check.

  PACKETTRACK HELPS MARK THE SPOT
Cerulean Technology's new PacketTrack mapping software can now pinpoint a mobile unit's location via the most detailed, realistic public safety mapping software available. The PacketTrack AVL/Mapping system is a component of the PacketCluster Patrol wireless information software suite. PacketTrack transmits patrol units' identification numbers, user names, statuses, latitudes and longitudes, and displays them as icons on digital maps. This information lets dispatchers quickly send the closest available unit to answer a call, gives officers directions to incidents based on their locations, and easily keeps track of undercover officers involved in dangerous situations. In addition, dispatchers can visually confirm that assigned units are moving toward the correct location.
